There are a lot cabs in Istanbul which are pretty cheap. But you should take notice of a few things:
- Check if the taximeter is on
- The start price is ca. 2,70 TL (in the evenings and at night a bit higher) and about 1,70 TL per km
- The day charge is called : 'gündüz', the night charge 'geçe'
- For example: For a drive for 10-15 minutes you shouldnt pay more than about 9-15 TL
- There are a lot taxi ranks all over the city but you can also wave a cab nearer
- Arrange enough time to find a free cabespecially on the weekends and evenings or let the hotel call you a cab
- A drive from the Airport Atatürk to the city center shouldn´t cost more than about 25 TL
- The "Taksi´s" dont really care much about traffic rules, like the most drivers here, honking fests arent uncommon :D
- Only a few cab drivers speak english, so note down your destination´s addresses or take a city plan with you
- Don´t arrange a fixed price, thats a rip-off, you can negotiate with the driver after the drive
Result: "Taksi" driving in Istanbul is an experience :D if you take notice of some rules. Cab drivers in Istanbul are very polite and friendly and dont mind some small talk. (of course there are always black sheeps)
